This is not a political post! Fret not! (Frankly, I am totally disgusted by political discourse on both sides right now.) What this is, is a huge craft project made by kids!
This huge picture was on display at the Crafts Convention last weekend. It was made by thousands of fourth graders from around the country. (My class did not participate. Somehow we missed out on this in the Crayonbox and that is just sad!)
You know I have a real soft spot for fourth graders and cool craft projects. So, I thought I would have a little contest. Can you guess what this is made of? That's the contest. Just guess what the big presidential picture is made of.
I picked up a bunch of craft magazines including Crafts'n things and Pack 'O Fun. My students are loving the copy of Pack 'O Fun I got for them. What a cool magazine for kids! I will send the winner a package of crafty magazines. If there are several correct guessers, I will randomly select the winner.
So what do you think? Go ahead and click on the picture to see it larger. I was right there and couldn't believe it.
On another note, I never did hear from the winner of the Citra-Solv contest. She has a private profile. So, if you have a private profile, please leave an email with your comment. And, I guess I will draw another winner for the Citra-Solv. Updated: After picking several other private profile people with the random number generator, I finally picked cneaglefan to be the winner because she left her email right in the comment!

well usually it's a lot of little pictures of something else, but I'll guess construction paper pieces - trying to think 4th graders supplies
hmmmm, i'm trying to think little- maybe sand?....
I have no idea...so how about glued on pieces of tissue paper...Like you put it on the eraser end of a pencil and dip it in glue and stick it down?
School pictures of themselves? I have looked and looked at that picture and can't figure it out!
It kind of looks like tiles of needlepoint. Each square has teeny diagonal lines, that's the closest thing I could think that would make them that uniform. Can't wait to find out what it is!
julieross37 at gmail dot com You know, on the off chance... :) (Not sure if it shows up on my profile or not.)
I think its' made of little photographs of students. That's my guess.
Push pins? I recently saw a news segment on a guy who makes portraits out of push pins. They were amazing.
I also think it was made from smaller photos of the children. I need some crafty ideas for 2nd graders! So, I really hope I win....
dang it, i was gonna guess little pictures but now i'm gonna guess punched confetti :D
I was going to say pictures too, that's funny! Since we all think alike, I'll say signatures or letters the kids wrote. Either way, what an amazing project for all those kids!
It reminds me of the jelly bean portraits on display at the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield. But, with a bunch of 4th grade artists, I bet many of the jelly beans wouldn't have made it to the portrait. I'm guessing it's something similar, but inedible, like beads.
Beads, beads, beads!
beads, hollow plastic beads (I think PhotoPearl is the brand name).
My first guess was.... I have no idea, then I cheated and googled it so I know the answer, one of the comments hit it right on the nose. I work in a preschool and would love the magazines.

I think it might be buttons... maybe?? If so, this is just CRAZY!! Even on the biggest resolution, it's hard to tell, you it has to be something super tiny, which doesn't constitute buttons, but that's what it kind of looks like.
Just wanted to say that I LOVE your blog. So crafty and fun- which I am not! :)
Perler Beads? I love those things! My lillte guy is still too young to break them out, but he tries everytime we get in the craft container. missswope@msn.com
Have no idea, but it's very cool! I'm guessing tissue paper, maybe? Or markers on overhead transparencies?
